I Said YES!

Updated: Jan 2, 2019

Bryce popped the question, and I said YES!

Now this isn’t your typical “proposal” - you know the one where the guy gets down on one knee and asks the girl for a lifetime of commitment by taking her hand in marriage. No, it isn’t quite like that, but this photo and upcoming year represents Bryce’s and my version of commitment towards each other.

To be honest, what Bryce and I are about to do is something we have thought about for some time. You could call it a dream, a goal, or even a wish that I had for us. I always hoped that we could make it a reality, but was never fully sure if we would be able to.

As you all know, getting older and stepping into adult-hood comes with a lot of different responsibilities. We both had student loans to pay off, car payments, figuring out how to budget, renting an apartment, advancing our careers, etc.

I also feel like there are these expectations pushed upon us from society on the steps a person should take as they grow older and move through life, and I feel like the pressure to buy a house, get married, and have babies is even greater if you are in a relationship. I want to be clear that I do not think that there is anything wrong with doing all of these things, and if you have chosen to get married and have kids, that is wonderful! I just have different desires for how I want to live my life. And I think that is okay too.

There are things that I want to do still, places I want to explore, and I just have this fear of getting “tied down” or “running out of time” and not being able to do some of these things with my best friend, Bryce. It wasn’t until this summer when I heard some really devastating news of a friends husband passing away suddenly that made me realize that life is too short. This terrible news was almost like a wake-up call and I realized that I don’t want to live my life with any regrets. I don’t want to wait until “the right time” or “when I retire” to go and do all of the things I have dreamed of doing with Bryce, because what if that time is unexpectedly cut short?

So in early November, Bryce and I made the decision to quit our jobs (yes, you read that right) to go on a 9 month Round-The-World (RTW) trip together. I know this might sound crazy, or a little bit insane, because it probably is, but I decided to listen to what my gut was telling me. Thinking about buying a house, working full-time with only 3 weeks of holidays a year, and putting money towards a wedding provided me with anxiety. But when I thought about not going on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure, I got a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. Almost a feeling of loss or regret.

Bryce and I agreed that the money we would have used towards a wedding (fun fact, the average Canadian wedding costs $30,000) would go towards our RTW trip. For me, I would much rather spend $30,000 on 275 days of exploring and going on new adventures with my best friend instead of planning a 1 day wedding. And that is exactly what we decided to do.

So this RTW trip is our “life-long” commitment towards each other - just in a slightly different way. Does that mean that Bryce and I will never get married? I’m not sure, but if we do, it will probably be a very small, low cost wedding. But who knows, only time will tell.

At this point, Bryce and I have been committed to each other for over 12 years, and in all honesty, I don’t think we need a ring or a big-budget wedding to show how strong our love is towards each other.

On January 19, 2019 Bryce and I are jetting off on this Big Adventure together! We first fly to the Cook Islands for 9 days in paradise before we fly to New Zealand for a 2 month road trip. After, we plan to make our way through SE Asia up to Japan, and depending on how our budget looks (fingers crossed) we will fly to South America before flying back home to Canada at the end of 2019.

Bryce and I will be sharing photos and videos of our RTW Trip on my blog, more as an online journal for ourselves and family members. I hope you will join us on this adventure, and if you have any tips of your favourite travel destinations or travel gear let us know!
